One of the questions I get asked the most is, "What should we wear?" And honestly... there's no single right answer.
The best outfits aren't the trendiest ones or the fanciest dresses. They're the ones that feel like you.
If your family lives in denim and sneakers, lean into that. If you're all about floaty dresses and boots, amazing. If bright colours make you happy, wear them. Your photos should look like your family, not someone else's Pinterest board.
The goal isn't to dress up as someone you're not. It's simply to wear a slightly more polished version of what you'd normally choose.
Start with one outfit you love
Choose one outfit that makes you feel amazing, then build everyone else's outfits around it. It might be Mum's favourite dress, your little one's adorable overalls, Dad's favourite overshirt, or a jumper you always get compliments on.
Once you've chosen your starting point, pull colours and textures from that outfit to create a look that feels connected without everyone matching exactly.
If you're unsure, send me a photo of everything laid out on the bed. I'm always happy to help.

Dress for the location & activity
Think about where we’ll be taking photos and what you’ll be doing. If we’re at the beach, light and breezy outfits (and bare feet!) make sense. If we’re in a field, warm earthy tones and cozy layers look beautiful. The goal is for your outfits to make sense for the setting so that everything feels natural and effortless.
Pick a colour scheme that flows
Gone are the days of everyone wearing beige. Soft earthy tones will always photograph beautifully, but don't be afraid to add colour if that's your vibe. Rich blues, forest greens, mustard, rust, dusty pinks, olive, warm reds or even fun prints can look incredible when they're balanced together.
Rather than everyone wearing the same colour, think about choosing a palette that complements each other. The goal is harmony, not matching.
A few things to avoid:
- Large logos or graphics that pull attention away from your faces.
- Neon colours, as they can reflect onto your skin.
- Everyone wearing exactly the same thing.
- Clothes that need constant adjusting or make you feel uncomfortable.
Add texture & movement
Texture brings photos to life. Think linen, denim, chunky knits, corduroy, cotton, lace, leather jackets, overalls or layered outfits. Mixing different fabrics adds depth and keeps your gallery feeling relaxed and natural.
Little details that make a big difference
- Small accessories like a hat or delicate jewellery can add a nice finishing touch
- Shoes matter! Neutral tones work best, and barefoot is perfect for beach sessions
- A cosy blanket to snuggle in or a rug to sit on (or run under!)
- Comfort is key - if something feels stiff or too tight, you’ll notice it in the photos
