Wondering when to book newborn photos? Here's my relaxed guide to timing your in-home newborn photography session, from sleepy newborns to older baby stages.
Bringing a new baby into the world is one of the most beautiful, overwhelming, and fast-moving seasons of life. Between the feeds, naps, cuddles and adjusting to your new rhythm, it’s completely normal to wonder — when is the best time to book newborn photos?
The honest answer is: there is no single perfect time.
As a lifestyle newborn photographer offering in-home newborn photography in Penrith, Blue Mountains and Greater Sydney, I believe every stage of your baby’s early life is worth capturing in a natural, relaxed way.
The first 2 weeks — that fresh newborn stage
If you are dreaming of those sleepy, curled-up, brand new baby photos, the first 5 to 14 days is typically what photographers refer to as the newborn window.
At this age, babies are usually very sleepy, naturally curled up and still adjusting to the outside world. If this is the look you love, I recommend booking your newborn session for around 2 weeks of age.
But just as importantly, this is not the only beautiful stage.
1 to 3 months - more alert, chubby & expressive
If your baby is a little older, there is absolutely no need to worry. Babies at 2 to 3 months are incredibly special to photograph.
At this stage they are often more alert and curious, starting to make eye contact, developing chubby little cheeks and stretches, and showing more personality.
These sessions feel different from the early newborn days, with less sleepy posing and more connection and interaction, but they are just as meaningful.
What if you miss the newborn window?
This is something I hear often, and the answer is simple. You have not missed anything.
If your baby is older, you can still absolutely have beautiful and timeless images. Many families choose to wait until the 4 to 6 month sitter stage when babies are more interactive, giggling and engaging, holding their head up and sometimes sitting unsupported.
This stage is full of personality and often feels playful, relaxed and full of connection between you and your baby. Every stage tells a different part of your story and there is no wrong time.
When should you book your newborn session?
Because most photographers only take a limited number of bookings each month, it is best to reach out during pregnancy if possible.
I recommend booking around 3 to 5 months in advance while you are still expecting. This allows your photographer to pencil in your due date and hold space for your session.
Once your baby arrives, you simply confirm the exact timing based on how things unfold. This flexibility is especially helpful for in-home newborn photography where sessions are gently shaped around your baby’s needs.

The most important thing to remember is that there is no perfect deadline for newborn photos. While the first couple of weeks is often ideal for that sleepy, curled-up look, beautiful images can still be created beyond this stage. What matters most is capturing your baby in a way that feels natural to your family. I offer relaxed in-home newborn photography for families in Penrith, the Blue Mountains and Western Sydney.
